I agree with you. The problem is that I'm not good at conflicts (in real life or in writing) and I'm also not good at endings. (I basically write these stories as practice for plotting and character development.) I also found it exceedingly difficult to write Tim talking that much about his feelings.
And now the question I'm left with is where is Al getting all this money? Is it from her family or something?
Fair question - she worked for three years as a truck mechanic for an oil company in Iraq. So the pay was ridiculously good and nearly all living expenses would have been covered. (Plus, when you work abroad, you don't have to pay tax on your first 82,000 in income or thereabouts, the idea being that you're paying tax in the foreign country. But I'm guessing a place without a functioning government probably isn't collecting much in the way of taxes.)
So, that, combined with an good, steady income and pretty cheap, simple tastes was plausible enough for me. :)
