Thank you - I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Maybe the premise was a little bit of artistic license, but honestly, it wouldn't surprise me. I went to a very conservative Catholic high school in Ohio where a presentation like that would have had consequences. Perhaps not as severe, but there would have been trouble.

I'm trying to think of something specific that happened to me, but I've thankfully blocked out a lot of those episodes. I frequently struggled with a few teachers regarding what was appropriate. What comes to mind is a hassle with a 10th grade English teacher over Camus, of all things.

I didn't get suspended or anything but she first failed me on format by taking 2 points off for every quote that was unproperly spaced. Then, when I successfully appealed that as unfair, she only brought my grade up to a C, since she claimed that in re-reading the paper, she'd found weaknesses in it. But, strangely, nothing wrong with the writing itself.

One slightly off-topic example, Tyra's student council election speech - that would have gotten her disqualified and possibly gotten her a detention or similar punishment. Our speeches had to be vetted and approved by the faculty moderator and any deviation would result in disqualification. I remember being particularly peeved because she made me take out a line that went something like 'Maybe you felt the previous student council was not responsive to your problems, ideas, and suggestions.' She felt that it was too much of a direct criticism. Hello??? Is this not a political process???

So, it was very plausible to me that a paper like that (esp. if it caused a disruption in class) could land a kid in some trouble. Sorry, didn't mean to write a book about it. :)

Oh, (and since this is already ridiculously long....why not add to it?) I've been meaning to say to you...I can't remember if I ever commented on it, since I didn't belong to LJ when I first read it, but I have your Tim/Jackie story bookmarked so I can read it on bad days when I need the distraction. :)
