Dear Crossovering Writer
Aug. 10th, 2018 08:55 pmHello, and thank you for volunteering to create a gift for the Crossovering exchange, which is quite possibly my most favourite exchange of all time. (But don't tell the other exchanges, I don't want them to feel bad!) Crossovers are definitely my most favourite thing about fandom and fan fiction - the possibilities of mixing up worlds and lives and seeing what happens.
Don't tell anyone, but the sad truth is that I am super-easy. :) I especially love love love love LOVE crossovers, so really, you can't go wrong here. Write a story that you enjoy writing and I'm sure I'll love it and enjoy reading it. In an effort to help, I'll tell you my general likes/dislikes and also give a few prompts for the requested fandom combos.
Last Tango in Halifax - - This show is my emotional happy place. Which is perhaps weird because I am so disappointed with the decisions made in Season 3 to kill Kate to bring the family back together. So ridiculous. So yeah, I ship Kate and Caroline like whoa. I also really appreciate the loving yet prickly and difficult relationship that Caroline has with her mother. And Caroline and Gillian are always pure comedy gold together.
Happy Valley - Catherine is the kick-ass awesome woman of my dreams. She doesn't always get it right, but she tries so hard. She is the epitome of "be brave and be kind". Her relationship with Clare is so real to me, as are her struggles to parent her grandson.
Kiri - You might see a theme here - I pretty much love Sarah Lancashire and think she's brilliant in everything she does. Kiri was such a heart-breaking story but it ends on a weird note of fragile hope for Miriam.
Billions - I am only current through Season 2, but goodness how I love the show. I love the moral ambiguity of it - how no one is the good guy and plenty of people are the bad guys. I am so interested in Taylor and understand they have a bigger role in S3, which I am very much looking forward to. (Apparently, my season pass on iTunes will have the episodes on Monday, but I'm not sure when I'll have time to watch.)
Friday Night Lights - Nine years ago, this show was my emotional happy place. The characters and their struggles are all so real to me. I loved Tim Riggins (always been a sucker for a 'bad' boy) and also Julie, who was kind and sweet but also trying to be tough and figure things out. I also loved the relationship between Tami and Eric - best depiction of marriage on television.
Sons of Anarchy - I love the first season of this show most of all, before it went off the rails and floundered in complicated and bloody plot devices. Jax, Chibs, Opie - I loved the relationships and how Jax was trying to change things.
The Good Place - Janet, Janet, Janet and more Janet. I also love the rest of the cast and the whole setup of the show. But Janet. She is amazing.
Rogue One - Quite simply, I think this is the best Star Wars movie in the franchise. It has everything - a sassy robot, a strong heroine, Darth Vader, a hilarious married couple (Baze and Chirrut, of course!), and so much adventure and such high stakes and oh I am getting woozy just thinking of it all.
Killing Eve - I loved the cat-and-mouse feel of this show, the witty dialogue, and the unexpected turns. Carolyn was an amazing character as well - so...odd.
Nailed It - Updating my request with this show because holy cow, I love it so much. The tone of this show is just right. I love how the judges always try to find something nice to say. I also love Nicole and her chemistry with Jacques. This show is my fun happy place right now.
But above all, have fun. If you find that the suggestions feel like a burden, then ignore them and write something that interests you. True passion shines through and makes a story special.
And I have to say - handwave all you need to get the universes crossed over. Don't feel like you have to write 1000 words of setup to get the characters in the right places. One line in a summary to set the scene is all I need!
I like...
angst, UST, longing looks, the 5+1 format, long-repressed feelings that explode one day, kid fic, roads not taken in canon, zombies, wacky road trips, old friends, handsome strangers, ghost stories, crazy decisions that are right even though they seem so very wrong, 2nd person narratives, porn that reveals more than just naked bodies, unreliable narrators, opening your presents on Christmas Day rather than Christmas Eve, and long deep slow kisses that last three days.
I do not want..
passivity, first-person narration, incest, non-con, non-canon slash, porn without plot, child death or grevious injury (unless it's canon and even then, no need to dwell on the details), and misusing the words less and fewer.
What I love about each of the items that appear in my requests:

Leverage - I love the team dynamic and the witty banter. Eliot is my favorite but I really love them all.
Supernatural - I've only seen SPN up to the end of Season 5. I love the dynamic between Sam and Dean and their banter. I also love Castiel.

As I'm reading over what I've written, I realize that it's the characters and their relationships that kindle my love for a show, book, or movie. (I suspect this interest is why I tend not to love movies, because the condensed time frame doesn't give me enough time to fall in love with the characters.)
General prompts that would apply to any combo:
A natural or manmade disaster strikes and characters must work together to save themselves and others
AU - The Zombie Apocalypse strikes - what is life like and how do the characters manage?
Wacky roadtrip, a la "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles"
Character backstories - I love a good backstory, especially when it has crossover implications
The road not taken...what happens when a character makes a different decision than in canon. How does the story (and more importantly, the character) change as a result of the decision.
Request specific prompts:
Last Tango in Halifax/Kiri/Happy Valley/Friday Night Lights
Nailed It!/Supernatural
Nailed It!/Killing Eve
Billions/The Good Place/Killing Eve/Rogue One/Sons of Anarchy
Leverage/Billions/Killing Eve
Request specific prompts:
Last Tango in Halifax/Kiri/Happy Valley/Friday Night Lights
- How about a backstory where Miriam (Kiri) tries to get a client into Caroline's fancy school (Last Tango) on a scholarship.
- What if one of Miriam's clients is the kid who hit Kate?
- One of my greatest joys in life is reading fan fic that contains two characters that are played by the same actor. I especially love when everyone else remarks on the similarities but the characters themselves don't see it.
- Catherine (Happy Valley) has to arrest a pupil at Caroline's new school and Caroline (Last Tango) protects the student the same way that she would've in the posh school.
- Julie (Friday Night Lights) goes over to Yorkshire as a young reporter, meets Catherine, and wants to write a story about her. (This basic idea would work with any of the other fandoms in this request as well.)
Nailed It!/Supernatural
- The set of the Nailed It! is haunted by a nasty ghost or one of the cast/crew (maybe Wes please let it be Wes) is infested by a demon and the one of the Winchester boys has to go on the show to solve the case.
Nailed It!/The Good Place
- Is Nailed It! actually a Good Place for sub-par home bakers? Or are Nicole and Jacques actually in the Good Place? I would just love to see these two worlds get mixed up together.
Nailed It!/Killing Eve
- Eve forgot that she even applied for that silly baking reality show. Then Villanelle finds out and follows her.
- Or maybe it's Caroline who has a secret baking hobby and her son enters her in the show.
Billions/The Good Place/Killing Eve/Rogue One/Sons of Anarchy
- The Good Place is a ready-made playground for any of the characters in the other shows in this request!
- Jyn expects that death will be nothingness, but instead she ends up in an unrecognizable world, full of loud, earth bound machines (Sons), treacherous well-dressed killers (Killing Eve), and/or people who squint and shout at screens for reasons she can't understand (Billions).
- Villanelle is sent to do a hit in Charming. Or in the world of Billions.
Leverage/Billions/Killing Eve
- Seems like Axe is exactly the kind of guy that Nate and the Leverage team would definitely want to stop. Or at least steal from.
- Villanelle is sent to stop the Leverage team. Or someone in the world of Billions.
