Missing the fandom communities of ten+ years ago

Long time, no post, but that's how things go, I guess. I am really missing fandom communities of ten+ years ago. There just does not seem to be anything like it anymore. I guess I partially blame the collapse of LiveJournal and the rise of Tumblr but also blame streaming services and how there are just so many things to watch and fall in love with that I guess it's hard for something to gather a critical mass. 

 

I've especially been thinking about it lately because I've completely fallen in love with "Atypical" on Netflix. I binged the first two seasons last year, but season three was such a treat. I have so many ideas running wild in my head and so much that I'd love to talk about and yet.....it's been impossible to find any community for it.

Maybe I am just too old and cranky to learn something new, but Tumblr does my head in. A friend once explained it to me as like Twitter, but for mostly visually blog posts. Which is an excellent description. But there's just no discussion. It's all just pretty pictures and reblogged posts. And there's no dates on anything (that I've found at least), so I always feel lost and unmoored. 

There does seem to be a lot of fanfic on Ao3, so it seems like the love for the show is out there, but no one seems interested in discussion and analysis.

So...on the off chance you also love Atypical, talk to me about it. :D

I...don't know what Atypical is, but I do miss you. What do we have in common to talk about? Do you you know Discord at all? It's a lot like IRC.

Aww, thanks. I miss you too. I lurk on your posts all the time. Well, when I remember to look at Dreamwidth. (I am part of the problem!)
I had a look through your tags to see what we have in common, which led me to your Good Place post, and I am so excited to see that there's a community for it! So thank you for that. :)
Other areas - Leverage, Star Wars, Harry Potter.... Are you watching The Mandalorian? Planning on seeing Episode 9? (Our kid is so excited for episode 9. It's great to see.)

And thanks for reminding me of Discord. I hung out on it around Yuletide last year to peek on drama, but had entirely missed the point that I might be able to use it for more constructive purposes!

I haven't watched The Mandalorian yet, I'm saving it for a hiatus on my regular shows.

Ah, the good old days. I'm with you, honey, I'm pretty sure LJ collapsing and Tumblr becoming the go-to place has a lot to do with fandom communities just not being the same. Oh well, we'll always the memory of those good old days of Leverageland and the such like ;)

I don't know anything about Atypical, I'm afraid. I tend to get into old stuff that everybody else has already seen lately, since not much of the new stuff strikes my fancy. My latest craze is Hart of Dixie, though I was very into Timeless but now that's gone too. What ya gonna do? *shrugs*

I have the same problem you do with Tumblr - I tried but it's just not for me. I do PM with some new friends I've made on Fanfiction.net about Hart of Dixie, so that's cool, and there seems to be quite a lot of Timeless fans that'll have discussions on Twitter, but yeah, I miss LJ comms and all that, most definitely.
